چکیده

In this article, a version of the frequency-domain elastodynamic Fast Multipole-Boundary Element Method (FM-BEM) for semi-infinite media, based on the half-space Green’s tensor (and hence avoiding any discretization of the planar traction-free surface), is presented. The half-space Green’s tensor is often used (in non-multipole form until now) for computing elastic wave propagation in the context of soil-structure interaction, with applications to seismology or civil engineering. However, unlike the fullspace Green’s tensor, the elastodynamic half-space Green’s tensor cannot be expressed using derivatives of the Helmholtz fundamental solution. As a result, multipole expansions of that tensor cannot be obtained directly from known expansions, and are instead derived here by means of a partial Fourier transform with respect to the spatial coordinates parallel to the free surface. The obtained formulation critically requires an efficient quadrature for the Fourier integral, whose integrand is both singular and oscillatory. Under these conditions, classical Gaussian quadratures would perform poorly, fail or require a large number of points. Instead, a version custom-tailored for the present needs of a methodology proposed by Rokhlin and coauthors, which generates generalized Gaussian quadrature rules for specific types of integrals, has been implemented. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed formulation is demonstrated through numerical experiments on single-layer elastodynamic potentials involving up to about N = 6×105 degrees of freedom. In particular, a complexity significantly lower than that of the non-multipole version is shown to be achieved.

Recent advances on the fast multipole accelerated boundary element method for 3D time-harmonic elastodynamics

This article is mainly devoted to a review on fast BEMs for elastodynamics, with particular attention on time-harmonic fast multipole methods (FMMs). It also includes original results that complete a very recent study on the FMM for elastodynamic problems in semi-infinite media. The main concepts underlying fast elastodynamic BEMs and the kernel-dependent elastodynamic FM-BEM based on the diago...

Adaptive fast multipole boundary element method for three-dimensional half-space acoustic wave problems

A new adaptive fast multipole boundary element method (BEM) for solving 3-D half-space acoustic wave problems is presented in this paper. The half-space Green’s function is employed explicitly in the boundary integral equation (BIE) formulation so that a tree structure of the boundary elements only for the boundaries of the real domain need to be applied, instead of using a tree structure that ...

New MLFMA Formulation for Closed PEC Targets in the Vicinity of a Half Space

The multi-level fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is applied to the problem of scattering from a closed perfect electric conductor (PEC) in the presence of a half space. The combined-field integral equation (CFIE) employs a new electric-field integral equation (EFIE) formulation, robust to a high basis-function sample rate, relative to wavelength. The new EFIE formulation is discussed, as is its...

Fundamental Steady state Solution for the Transversely Isotropic Half Space

Response of a transversely isotropic 3-D half-space subjected to a surface time-harmonic excitation is presented in analytical form. The derivation of the fundamental solutions expressed in terms of displacements is based on the prefect series of displacement potential functions that have been obtained in the companion paper by the authors. First the governing equations are uncoupled in the cyl...

Fast Multipole Boundary Element Method in 2D Elastodynamics

This paper is concerned with the fast multipole boundary element method (FMBEM) in two dimensional frequency domain elastodynamics. The fast multipole method (FMM) is derived by the Galerkin vector in the elastodynamic field. The elastodynamic field is expressed as the sum of the longitudinal and transverse wave fields, and the Galerkin vector FMM is simply derived from the scalar wave FMM. Mul...
